Lookup Combo Box

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Wherever you can do a Lookup for a value to enter into a field, you will find that the Lookup Combo Box offers several more conveniences than the typical lookup-box, including the ability to add new entries "on-the-fly."

There are two types:

Simple Lookup Combo - for lists with a limited number of entries
Popup Lookup Combo - for lists with a large number of entries, like Parts

The remainder of this topic describes the Simple Lookup Combo Box. See the Popup Lookup Combo Box for the more complex Popup version, which includes a search for large lists.

A Simple Lookup Combo Box has three sections:

Left

data entry section

start keying, key-match search finds the closest match

Middle

down-arrow

click to display drop-down list of existing entries - choose with a single-click

Right

the Ellipsis (...)

click to bring up the Small Lookup, Add or Edit screen, used to maintain the possible values (double-click opens an entry)

To remove an existing entry in the field, place the cursor at the last letter of the entry and use the Backspace key to eliminate all characters. When you are done, the field will be empty and you can update the record to have it stay that way.
