Connect from Remote Locations

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

FieldOne has been optimized to allow clients "outside" of the network to connect to the server directly, without any intermediate software or services. This design (combined with highly compressed data) allows access from anywhere in the world, as long as you have an Internet connection.

An example of this type of setup would be using a laptop with a wireless cellular card accessing the Company server behind its firewall.

You will be able to connect remotely, almost without noticing that you are using the Internet. You do not have to use a VPN setup or purchase an expensive Terminal Services session license. The method used by FieldOne is even faster (for most operations) than using those solutions.

You need to configure your router to allow connection to your application server whenever there are requests coming in from FieldOne clients. This is typically referred to as Port Forwarding.

We describe below the requirements to make remote connections work. Some of the steps require IT knowledge and you may need to contact your IT Department or ISP (Internet Service Provider) for help. Please note that FieldOne Systems, LLC. does not provide support to set up Port Forwarding on your router.

Server Address:

You will need to have a Static IP Address on the server side to connect to your server remotely.

If your ISP provides you with a Dynamic IP Address you will need to set up a DNS Software solution. This will provide an internet name to reference on your client machines that will act like a Static IP Address and will always forward to your server's IP address.

Router Settings:

The exact method to do Port Forwarding depends on your router's make and model. Keep in mind that you should "forward" all incoming requests for Port 16000 (using the TCP protocol) to the machine that hosts the FieldOne server. And the same is true for Port 8098 (using the TCP protocol).

Recommendations:

Make sure that there is no firewall-blocking on the server machine for the two ports named above in Router Settings.

If you are having trouble connecting your client remotely, first try to ensure the connection within the local network. If this works, it means that the server machine is set up properly. Once you succeed in connecting within your LAN, then try using a WAN connection.
